Winterizing your outboard: the step-by-step guide

Properly winterized, your outboard survives the off-season without standstill damage. This guide walks you through fuel, oil, preservation and storage – for petrol and electric.

Winterizing your outboard: the step-by-step guide

When the season ends, winterizing decides how reliably your motor starts again in spring. Most spring starting problems are not caused by wear but by skipped winter care. This guide takes you through the key steps in order – for 4-stroke petrol engines as well as electric drives.

Why winterizing matters

Fuel left standing for months gums up, condensation collects inside the engine, and salt residue attacks metal parts. A few steps in autumn prevent exactly that. Set aside a quiet hour for it – it pays off in spring.

1. Flush the engine

After your last trip, flush the engine with fresh water until all salt and dirt residues are gone – ideally with flushing muffs or in a flushing tank. Run the engine briefly so the cooling system is flushed too. Then run it briefly without water to empty the water pump.

2. Prepare the fuel system

Standing fuel is the most common cause of spring starting trouble. Two proven ways: run the tank and carburettor dry, or treat the fuel with a stabiliser and run the engine briefly so the stabilised fuel reaches the whole system. On carburettor engines, draining the float chamber is recommended.

3. Change oil and gear oil

Used oil contains acids and water that attack components over winter. So change the engine oil (on 4-strokes) and the gear oil before the break. Watch the drained gear oil for a milky colour – that points to water ingress and a leaking seal, which you should then have checked.

4. Preserve the engine

Spray a little preserving oil into the cylinders through the spark plug openings and turn the engine over by hand a few times so a protective film forms. Outside, a corrosion-protection spray shields bare metal. Grease moving parts such as linkages and swivel bearings.

5. Store electric outboards correctly

For an electric outboard, the battery is the focus: store the lithium battery at about half charge, dry and frost-free, and top it up occasionally over winter. The motor itself needs no oil but should also be flushed with fresh water and stored dry.

6. Battery and storage

Remove the starter battery (on electric-start models), charge it fully and store it frost-free. Store the motor upright or as specified by the manufacturer so no residual water sits in the drive. A breathable cover keeps dust off without trapping condensation.

Quick checklist

  • Flush with fresh water, empty the water pump
  • Stabilise the fuel or run it dry
  • Change engine oil and gear oil
  • Preserve cylinders and outer surfaces
  • Store the battery correctly
  • Store upright, dry and frost-free

FAQ

Do I have to empty the tank or is a stabiliser enough?

Both work. What matters is that no untreated fuel stands for months. Either run the tank and carburettor dry, or stabilise the fuel and run the engine briefly so the stabilised fuel reaches the whole system.

How do I store the lithium battery of my electric outboard over winter?

Dry, frost-free and at about half charge. Top it up occasionally during the break so it does not deep-discharge. Also follow the manufacturer's guidance on storage temperature and charge level.

How do I recognise water in the gearbox?

If the drained gear oil is milky rather than clear, water has got in – usually through a leaking seal. Have the seal checked before the new season to avoid damage.

Can I winterize the motor myself?

Yes, the basic steps – flushing, fuel, oil change, preservation, storage – are easy to do yourself. If in doubt, or for larger maintenance, a specialist workshop is the safe choice.
